WHERE IS THE CONSCIENCE OF THE GUARANTORS OF THE ALGIERS PEACE AGREEMENT?

THE EEBC DECISION TEN YEARS LATER AND ETHIOPIA'S ILLEGAL OCCUPATION:
WHERE IS THE CONSCIENCE OF THE GUARANTORS OF THE ALGIERS PEACE AGREEMENT?
By Sammy G.

In December 2000, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed the Algiers Peace Agreement on their disputed borders allowing a Hague-based independent Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) to render a "final and binding" decision. The AU, EU, UN and USA witnessed this historic agreement as 'Guarantors of the Peace Agreement." And in April 13, 2002, the EEBC reached a verdict that was hailed by the U.N. and AU and EU. Eritrea accepted the decision. While Ethiopia, which initially appeared to accept it and in fact boasted of its favorable outcome, reneged on delimitation implementation.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of EEBC decision and Ethiopia has yet to accept the unconditional implementation of the "final and binding" agreement. And the Unites States, as key Guarantor of the Peace Agreement, have yet to condemn, compel or sanction Ethiopia for failing to abide by the verdict and by international rule of law. Also, the United States, which worked hard to get the two countries to the Algiers Agreement and lectured about the supremacy of the rule of law, has turned a blind eye since "ally" Ethiopia's openly defied the final and binding EEBC verdict.

In fact, in an Orwellian twist of logic, the United States wasted huge resources to alter the EEBC verdict and to even has gone as far as fabricating and implementing "sanctions" against Eritrea, all in a shameful effort to deflect growing intentional pressure on Ethiopia's defiance, illegal invasion of Somalia, terrorizing of internal opponents and provocative incursions inside Eritrea, among other gross violations. The Unites States should exert necessary pressure on Ethiopia to unconditionally comply with international rule of law and must cease and desist from making Eritrea a sacrificial lamb in a selfish game of self-interest. The American tax-payer money should not be used to finance lawless "ally" Prime Minster Meles Zenawi who made a precedent by flouting the EEBC neutral verdict.
